Synopsis
Caro diario (Dear Diary, 1993) is an Italian-French comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Writer-director Nanni Moretti also plays himself across three loosely connected chapters that read like pages from an actual diary — personal, digressive and quietly funny. The film won the Best Director prize at Cannes 1994.
The first chapter puts Moretti on a Vespa scooter drifting through a deserted summer Rome, narrating his thoughts about cinema, neighbourhoods and everything else he passes. The second follows him island-hopping with a friend who has been trying to finish Joyce's Ulysses for years. The third chapter shifts completely: a calm, dry account of the months Moretti spent misdiagnosed before doctors finally identified Hodgkin's lymphoma. The tonal jump is deliberate and it lands.
