Leaves of Grass

Bill is a polished Ivy League philosophy professor with a tidy, controlled life. Brady is his mirror image gone the other way: a sharp-tongued dropout growing top-shelf weed in the backwoods of Oklahoma. When Brady lures his brother home under false pretenses, the buttoned-up academic lands in the middle of a scheme to take down a local drug kingpin. From there blood, Socratic quotes and pure absurdity bleed into one another with no warning.

Tim Blake Nelson directs and also turns up as Brady's dim sidekick Bolger, with Susan Sarandon and Richard Dreyfuss rounding out the cast. The tone lurches from hayseed comedy to hard thriller, and that swerve is exactly the appeal. It's for viewers who don't mind a film changing genres mid-scene.
