Synopsis
A Bag of Marbles (Un sac de billes, 2017) is Christian Duguay's wartime drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. In occupied Paris of the early 1940s, the Nazi authorities order Jews to sew a yellow star onto their coats, and one family has to scatter just to survive.
It's drawn from Joseph Joffo's bestselling memoir. A Parisian Jewish barber (Patrick Bruel) sends his two youngest sons across the country on their own, betting that splitting up gives them a better shot at reaching the free zone in the south. Ten-year-old Joseph and his brother Maurice walk, ride trains, lie their way through every checkpoint, and learn never to admit under questioning that they are Jewish. Boys who once traded glass marbles are suddenly gambling with their lives.
This is the second adaptation of the book, after a 1975 version, but Duguay films it at a child's eye level: the horror arrives the way a kid would register it, without melodrama or lectures. Elsa Zylberstein and Christian Clavier appear as adults whose help can rescue the boys or nearly doom them. A quiet, humane story about a brotherly bond holding firm while everything else falls apart. Stream A Bag of Marbles (2017) online on iFILM.
