About

Synopsis

Gattaca (1997) — watch online on iFILM — is Andrew Niccol's sci-fi thriller set in a near future where a blood test at birth decides everything: your job, your social rank, how long you'll live. Children conceived naturally are branded "invalids" and locked out of any meaningful career.

Vincent Freeman was born with a heart defect and a 30-year life expectancy. His goal is to reach space. To get there, he buys the identity of Jerome Morrow — a genetically engineered athlete played by Jude Law who can no longer use his own perfect genes — and slips into the elite Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. Ethan Hawke plays Vincent as a man who is one stray eyelash away from being exposed at any moment. Days before his scheduled launch, a murder inside the corporation sends investigators hunting for genetic traces — traces that point straight to him. Uma Thurman plays a colleague who begins to suspect the truth and has to decide what to do with it.

Niccol built the film's world almost entirely through architecture and social rules rather than effects or gadgets, giving it a cold, procedural texture that still feels prescient. Written and directed by Niccol, Gattaca arrived years before CRISPR entered the public conversation. Stream Gattaca online on iFILM.
