Synopsis
"Gold Diggers of 1935" is a Warner Bros. musical comedy by Busby Berkeley — watch it online on iFILM. Dick Powell and Gloria Stuart lead the cast in Berkeley's first outing as full director, not just the man in charge of the production numbers.
A tightfisted millionairess takes over a New England lakeside resort every summer — this year with her sullen daughter Ann, her son who can't stop chasing chambermaids, and Ann's fiancé Thorpe, a middle-aged pedant writing a monograph on snuffboxes. Ann tells her mother: the hotel's charming clerk Dick Curtis (Powell) escorts her all summer, or the engagement is off. Things go exactly as you'd expect. Berkeley saves his real statement for the "Lullaby of Broadway" number, which took the Academy Award for Best Original Song — a sequence ambitious enough to play as a short film embedded inside a feature.
