Architect Don Bellows finds former Broadway star Joyce Heath broke and drinking herself into the street. Word around the theatre circuit is that she's cursed — every producer or man who got involved ended up fired, divorced, or worse. Bellows brushes it off and hauls her to his Connecticut estate to dry out. Franchot Tone plays Bellows with enough warmth to make his slide into obsession feel credible. But the film belongs to Davis: she makes Joyce genuinely unpredictable rather than just "troubled," which is exactly why the curse stories stop sounding far-fetched by the end.
