Synopsis
The Company Men (2010), directed by John Wells, is a drama you can watch online on iFILM. Sales executive Bobby Walker is living the American dream: big title, nice house, a shiny Porsche in the garage. Then corporate downsizing arrives, and the job is suddenly gone.
The 2008 crash pulls the rug out from under three men at once. Ben Affleck plays Bobby, young and cocky, addicted to a lifestyle he can no longer pay for. Tommy Lee Jones is the company veteran who quietly despises the bosses he answers to. Chris Cooper is the older employee for whom a layoff feels like a death sentence. Kevin Costner turns up as a blue-collar brother-in-law whose construction crew Bobby eventually joins, hammer in hand. Each has to figure out who he is once the salary and the business card are gone.
Wells, the showrunner behind ER and The West Wing, made a clear-eyed film about how work quietly stands in for identity. It stays low-key, built on nuance and a strong ensemble, with a restrained Jones the standout. A good fit if you like grown-up social drama without the fireworks.
