The Langoliers (Season 1)

The Langoliers (1995) is a sci-fi miniseries you can watch online on iFILM. Tom Holland directed this two-part adaptation of the Stephen King novella. Ten passengers doze off on a red-eye from Los Angeles to Boston and wake to find the rest of the plane empty — no crew, no other travelers, as though everyone was plucked out of their seats mid-flight.

A blind girl is among the survivors, and a pilot manages to set the jet down at an airport in Maine. The world outside is dead, though: no sound, no smell, matches won't strike, food has no taste. Then a far-off crunching rolls in from the horizon — the langoliers, devourers of spent time, raved about by a frazzled businessman played by Bronson Pinchot. King's hook isn't a killer or a ghost but the idea of the past itself being eaten away behind us. The effects are dated TV-movie work, yet the concept grips harder than any CGI could, which makes this a treat for King fans and lovers of retro genre television.
