Synopsis
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022), Season 1 — ten episodes you can watch online on iFILM. HBO's drama drops you into 1979 Los Angeles, where a fast-talking real-estate mogul named Jerry Buss has just staked everything he owns on a basketball team nobody believes in.
The season traces the dynasty's year zero: the draft-day gamble that brings Earvin Johnson to Los Angeles over coach Jerry West's objections, the cold standoff between a rookie Magic and a skeptical Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the financial pressure mounting on Buss before the regular season even starts. New coaches McKinney and Westhead install a run-and-gun offense the league hasn't seen; Pat Riley watches from the edge of the frame. Earvin, meanwhile, figures out how to exist in a new city with the weight of it on his shoulders — corporate sponsors, reporters, and the constant feeling that one wrong move ends everything. The 1980 NBA Finals are the destination, but the show earns the finish by making the chaos before it feel true.
