Synopsis
Going Places (Les Valseuses, 1974) is Bertrand Blier's provocative tragicomedy, available to watch online on iFILM. Two aimless small-time thugs drift across the French countryside, stealing cars and needling every respectable citizen they meet.
Jean-Claude and Pierrot live for the next thrill: they swipe, they provoke, they run, and they land right back in trouble. Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere play the pair just as their careers caught fire. They pick up Marie-Ange, a passive, drifting hairdresser played by Miou-Miou, who becomes their shared companion on the road. Watch for Jeanne Moreau and a very young Isabelle Huppert in supporting turns.
Scandalous on release, the film launched several giants of French cinema in one stroke. It is crude, deliberately offensive and oddly melancholy, chasing a kind of freedom with no rules and feeling for emotion in places long emptied of it. For lovers of 1970s auteur cinema, Going Places (1974) is worth the trip. Stream it on iFILM.
