Synopsis
Frida (2002) is a biographical drama directed by Julie Taymor — watch online to see Salma Hayek turn a life of unrelenting physical pain into one of cinema's most vivid portraits. Hayek plays Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter who became an icon, and she also fought years to produce the film herself. It earned two Academy Awards: for Best Makeup and Best Original Score.
At eighteen, Frida survived a bus collision that shattered her spine and pelvis. Immobilized for months, she started painting. What followed was a decades-long career built on self-portraiture, surrealism and raw autobiography. Alfred Molina plays Diego Rivera — the colossal muralist who became Frida's husband, champion and recurring wound. Their marriage cycled through betrayal, separation and reconciliation against the political upheaval of 1930s and '40s Mexico. Edward Norton, Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd and Geoffrey Rush each appear in supporting roles.
Taymor structures the film like Kahlo's canvases — bold color, surrealist sequences, the body as subject. Composer Elliot Goldenthal wove Mexican folk music into a full orchestral score to match. Stream Frida (2002) online on iFILM.
