There are no locks and no walls. The doorway stands wide open, yet not a single person can cross it. As days pass, the food runs out, the water runs out, and the polished manners peel away until guests who were discussing opera the night before are clawing at a broken pipe for a drink. Buñuel never explains the trap. That refusal is the whole point. Silvia Pinal, Enrique Rambal and Claudio Brook lead a cast of twenty playing Mexico's complacent upper crust.

Screened at Cannes, the film cemented Buñuel's reputation as cinema's sharpest mocker of the bourgeoisie, peeling the veneer of civility off a dinner table to show the animal panic underneath.
