Chasing Sleep

Chasing Sleep (2001) is a psychological horror-thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Jeff Daniels plays Ed, a college literature professor who wakes one morning to realize his wife Eve never came home the night before.

Ed works the phones — her best friend, the hospital, the police. There's a report of a stolen car and an abducted blonde woman, but the victim turns out not to be Eve. Days pass and Ed doesn't sleep at all. He stops going to work, seals himself inside the house, and the rooms start bending in ways rooms shouldn't. By the end neither he nor the viewer can tell hallucination from whatever really happened to his wife.

Director Michael Walker keeps almost the entire film inside one house and on one actor, and Daniels carries that dread by himself. It's slow, airless and deliberately withholding — closer to a waking nightmare than a tidy mystery. If you like unsettling films that never reach for a jump scare, this one fits.
