A lavish winter train pulls out of Istanbul and grinds to a halt, buried in a snowdrift somewhere in the Balkans. By morning a passenger lies stabbed behind a bolted compartment door — Ratchett, a shady American businessman with a buried past (Johnny Depp). Nobody can leave, and the killer is still aboard. Poirot agrees to crack the case before another body turns up, working through the travellers one by one: a chattering widow (Michelle Pfeiffer), a governess (Daisy Ridley), a maid (Penélope Cruz), a stern missionary (Judi Dench).

Branagh fills every seat with marquee names — Willem Dafoe, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Olivia Colman — and shot the whole thing on wide 65mm film, turning a cramped carriage into a puzzle box with a false bottom.
