Synopsis

Louis Wain is a scattered, brilliant eccentric — a self-taught inventor convinced that electricity is the hidden energy running through everything. He supports a houseful of sisters, sketches for the papers at a frantic pace, and falls for Emily Richardson, the governess hired for his siblings, a woman older than him and below his social rank. Their marriage is scandalous and brief. After illness takes her, Wain pours his grief into cat portraits that grow brighter, odder, more psychedelic as his own mind begins to fray.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays Wain poised between genius and breakdown, while Claire Foy gives the early scenes their warmth as Emily. Sharp tells the life not as dry chronicle but as a flow of color, light and quiet ache, with Olivia Colman narrating and Toby Jones and Nick Cave turning up along the way.
