Synopsis

In the summer of 1860, a three-year-old boy is taken from his bed at an elegant Wiltshire manor and found dead on the grounds. Local constables are out of their depth — the Home Office sends Whicher, nicknamed the "Prince of Detectives," to break the case before it becomes a national embarrassment. The family closes ranks. The village closes ranks. Everyone has a version of events and none of them quite match. Adapted from Kate Summerscale's award-winning non-fiction bestseller, the film earns its tension from the gap between what Whicher sees and what polite society will allow him to say.
