Detective Chief Superintendent Maurice Jobson helped close a child murder case nine years ago, and a local boy went to prison for it. Now another girl has gone missing, and a down-at-heel solicitor named John Piggott has started asking the questions nobody wanted asked. The deeper he digs, the more it looks like Jobson's department has been running Yorkshire less as a police force and more as an occupation. Nobody's hands are clean. Nobody wants this reopened.
