Sharper

Sharper (2023) is Benjamin Caron's crime thriller, available to watch online on iFILM. Manhattan, serious money, and people who lie more smoothly than they breathe. The film unfolds in chapters, and each one quietly undoes whatever you believed in the last.

It opens in a hushed bookstore, where shy clerk Tom falls for a customer named Sandra (Briana Middleton). It looks like a tender little romance — looks being the operative word. Then the story rewinds and shows the same faces from another angle: seasoned grifter Max (Sebastian Stan), his mentor and lover Madeline (Julianne Moore), and billionaire Richard Hobbes (John Lithgow), whose fortune is the prize the whole game circles. Only at the end do you learn who has been playing whom.

Caron, a director on The Crown, builds the suspense through editing and withheld information rather than action, while Moore and Stan play charming predators you should not trust for a second.
