Synopsis
Beach Rats (2017) is Eliza Hittman's indie drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's summer on the edge of Brooklyn, Frankie's father is dying, and the seventeen-year-old has no idea who he is or what he wants.
Frankie burns his days drifting and getting high with a crew of restless friends. His nights go elsewhere — to hookup sites where he arranges meetings with older men. At the same time he starts seeing a girl named Simone, trying to convince her, and himself, that everything is fine. The film is in no hurry to explain its lead or pass judgment on him; it simply watches a kid pulled apart by what others expect and what he actually craves.
This was Harris Dickinson's first major role, well before Peaky Blinders and Dunkirk. Hittman shot on grainy 16mm film, and the smoky late-night Coney Island does as much work as any line of dialogue. The directing prize at Sundance was earned.
