Synopsis
The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) is Marielle Heller's drama you can watch online on iFILM. In 1970s San Francisco, fifteen-year-old Minnie dreams of drawing comics and starts an affair with her mother's boyfriend.
Minnie records her thoughts onto cassette tapes, and through those confessions we watch her come of age with no varnish on it: first desire, wine, drugs, and the wild swings between shame and exhilaration. Bel Powley plays her with neither judgment nor pity, a real teenager still working out who she is. Alexander Skarsgård is the casually charming older lover, and Kristen Wiig the mother who has barely grown up herself. Animated flourishes bring what is racing through Minnie's head to life.
Heller's debut, adapted from Phoebe Gloeckner's graphic novel, made waves at Sundance precisely because it speaks about a girl's desire plainly, in her own voice, without a lecture attached.
