His married friends Dick and Linda keep setting him up, but the real spark catches where nobody planned it: between Allan and Linda, his best friend's wife. Diane Keaton plays her tender and high-strung, and the Allen-Keaton chemistry here is the early draft of what later becomes Annie Hall.

Directed by Herbert Ross from Allen's own stage play, which he first tested on Broadway, the film ends with a sly riff on Casablanca's own farewell that movie buffs will clock instantly.
