Tulip Fever

Sophia (Alicia Vikander) has been married off to Cornelis Sandvoort, an aging spice trader played by Christoph Waltz. When painter Jan van Loos (Dane DeHaan) arrives, the two fall into an affair they both know is dangerous. Desperate to fund an escape and a life of their own, the lovers gamble everything on the speculative bulb trade, where prices climb on pure mania. One bad turn at the flower auction, and the whole scheme could collapse.

Tom Stoppard adapted Deborah Moggach's novel for the screen, and the supporting cast includes Judi Dench as an abbess running her own bulb business, plus Zach Galifianakis and Holliday Grainger. The real pull here is texture: candle smoke, wet Dutch light, the feel of a painter's studio. Best for viewers who like their costume dramas with a bitter aftertaste.
