About

Synopsis

The Promise (2016) is a historical romance you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Terry George of Hotel Rwanda. It opens in Constantinople as the Ottoman Empire slides toward collapse. Mikael, an Armenian medical student, arrives to train and hopes to bring modern care back to his village.

Oscar Isaac plays Mikael; Charlotte Le Bon is Ana, the painter he falls for; Christian Bale is Chris, the American reporter already at her side. Their tangled romance frays once the state turns on its Armenian population. The men end up on opposite sides of a widening war, bound only by a vow to live and bear witness.

What sets the film apart is its willingness to name the 1915 Armenian genocide head-on, a subject mainstream cinema sidestepped for years. George keeps the focus on three people rather than a textbook timeline, and the cast runs deep, with Jean Reno and James Cromwell turning up in support. Stream The Promise (2016) online on iFILM.
