Synopsis
Fiddler on the Roof (1971) is Norman Jewison's musical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Tevye, a poor milkman, raises five daughters in a Jewish village and argues with God as if the Almighty were leaning on the fence next door.
The year is 1905, somewhere in the Pale of Settlement of Tsarist Russia. One by one, Tevye's older daughters pick love over the matchmaker: Tzeitel wants a penniless tailor, Hodel follows a young radical to Siberia, Chava marries outside the faith. Every choice chips away at the custom Tevye sums up in a single word — tradition. Beyond the village, a pogrom is brewing, and the whole community lives under an eviction order. Chaim Topol plays Tevye without a drop of sugar: stubborn, grumbling, tender, and fiercely loyal to his own.
Adapted from the Broadway hit, the three-hour film took home three Oscars — Oswald Morris for cinematography, John Williams for his music adaptation, and the sound team. Numbers like "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset" long ago slipped past the screen into the wider world. It's worth your time for something rare: a musical that treats faith and exile as deadly serious. Stream Fiddler on the Roof (1971) online on iFILM.
