Synopsis
Breaking Surface (2020) is a Scandinavian survival thriller you can watch online on iFILM, and it will hold your breath for you. Two half-sisters drive out to the icy coast of Northern Norway for a winter dive. The descent goes fine, right up until a rockslide pins one of them to the seabed at ten meters down. Above the surface there's only cold, empty shoreline and no one coming to help.
Moa Gammel plays Ida; Madeleine Martin plays her trapped sister Tuva. The rescue falls on one woman alone, and the math is brutal: a dwindling air tank, a phone left back in the car, and every plunge into freezing water counting against her. Director Joachim Hedén builds the tension out of minutes and meters — how many more dives are possible before the cold or the depth takes her too.
It runs a lean 79 minutes, nearly wordless and almost scoreless, just the raw mechanics of disaster and panic. A Swedish, Norwegian and Belgian co-production.
