About

Synopsis

The Haunting (1963) is Robert Wise's black-and-white horror film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Anthropologist Dr. John Markway gathers three strangers inside a New England mansion to test whether its walls really hold something that kills.

Hill House has a body count. Markway (Richard Johnson) brings in the estate's heir Luke Sanderson (Russ Tamblin), the sharp, mocking psychic Theo (Claire Bloom), and the fragile Eleanor Vance (Julie Harris), a woman already coming apart at the seams. Night after night the corridors fill with pounding, breathing on the other side of the door, and a cold that has no source. Worse, the house seems to want Eleanor specifically.

Wise built the dread out of sound, shadow and warped camera angles instead of gore, and Davis Boulton's cinematography keeps you doubting what the characters see. Shirley Jackson's novel sits behind it, and Stephen King later called it one of the finest horror books ever written. If atmosphere scares you more than a jump cut, this slow burn is exactly your kind of fear. Stream The Haunting (1963) online on iFILM.
