Synopsis

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is a science fiction adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Robert Wise, the filmmaker behind West Side Story, it brought Gene Roddenberry's crew to the big screen for the first time.

A vast, mysterious cloud is heading for Earth. It has already destroyed three Klingon cruisers, and only one ship can reach it in time: the refitted U.S.S. Enterprise. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes command once more and reunites his old crew, including the Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. McCoy and engineer Scotty. What lives inside the entity called V'Ger, and why is it searching for its creator? The answer turns out to be strangely human.

Picking up from the 1960s television series, the film launched a long run of Enterprise features. This is slow, contemplative space opera built on Douglas Trumbull's effects and a sense of scale rather than firefights. Jerry Goldsmith's score, later reused for The Next Generation, gives the voyage its grandeur. Stream Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) online on iFILM.
