Synopsis
The Sound of Music (1965) is Robert Wise's musical romance you can watch online on iFILM. Austria, in the last calm months before the war. Maria is a postulant who loves singing and slipping off to the mountain meadows far too much to make a good nun.
The abbey sends her off to govern the household of widowed naval captain von Trapp, where seven children march to a whistle and tiptoe around their father. Maria breaks that drill apart with songs, games and play clothes stitched from old curtains. The captain, stiff and prickly at first, softens; feelings grow between them, even as he brings a baroness home from Vienna as his bride. Outside, the annexation is closing in on Salzburg, and the family must choose between swearing loyalty to a new flag and a quiet escape over the Alps.
Wise's film took five Academy Awards, Best Picture among them, and stayed near the top of the all-time box office for years. It grew out of the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical and the real von Trapp family story. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer carry the numbers themselves: "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss," "My Favorite Things." Stream The Sound of Music (1965) online on iFILM.
