Synopsis

The Howling (1981) is Joe Dante's werewolf horror, and you can watch it online on iFILM. TV reporter Karen White agrees to meet the stalker who's been hunting her, then barely survives when he turns into something that isn't human at all.

Shaken and unable to remember the attack, Karen is sent to The Colony, a secluded retreat run by the soothing Dr. Waggner. The cabins are quiet, the woods are deep, and the group therapy feels off. So do the neighbors. Something howls past the tree line after dark, and Karen starts to suspect the clinic isn't treating monsters so much as breeding them. Dee Wallace anchors it all as a woman who realizes she ran straight into the den.

Dante turned a pulpy premise into a sly, genuinely scary picture. Rob Bottin built the centerpiece transformation as a live, on-camera bone-stretching nightmare with no cutaways, and it still lands harder than most digital effects today. Released the same year as An American Werewolf in London, it helped reset what creature features could do. Best for fans of practical gore and horror with a wicked grin.
