Synopsis
Muriel's Wedding (1994) is P.J. Hogan's Australian tragicomedy, ready to watch online on iFILM. Muriel Heslop dreams of one thing — a wedding of her own — even though she has never been on a date. She drifts through life in the dead-end coastal town of Porpoise Spit on a steady diet of ABBA records and bridal magazines.
Her so-called friends mock her, her bullying politician father grinds her down, and the fantasy of a white dress is all she has. Then she flees to Sydney and falls in with Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), a loud, reckless fellow outcast who treats her like she actually matters. Toni Collette plays Muriel without an ounce of vanity: new hair, new name, a borrowed veil, and a slow, painful realisation that the wedding obsession is really a way to escape who everyone told her to be.
The film dresses up as a feel-good comedy and then lands a harder punch — under the glitter and the ABBA singalongs sits a sharp story about shame, friendship and the cost of becoming yourself. The breakout role made Toni Collette a star and earned Rachel Griffiths plenty of notice too. Stream Muriel's Wedding (1994) online on iFILM.
