Synopsis
The Spectacular Now (2013) is a coming-of-age romance you can watch online on iFILM, directed by James Ponsoldt. High-school senior Sutter Keely lives entirely for the present: parties, easy charm, a whiskey flask never far from his hand. The future is somebody else's problem.
After his girlfriend dumps him, Sutter drinks himself into a stupor and wakes up on a stranger's lawn, with quiet classmate Aimee Finicky standing over him. She is his opposite — a sci-fi reader who already knows where she wants to go to college. A romance starts almost by accident, and for a while it lifts them both. Then Sutter's drinking stops looking like a joke. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley underplay every scene, letting silences do the work most teen films hand to a soundtrack.
Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler and Bob Odenkirk fill out the supporting cast. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber adapted Tim Tharp's novel — the writing team behind (500) Days of Summer — and the film took a special jury prize at Sundance for its two leads.
