Opera

Opera (1987) is Dario Argento's operatic giallo, available to watch online on iFILM. A young soprano named Betty lands the lead in Macbeth, then becomes the prisoner of a killer who forces her to witness every murder he commits.

When the production's diva is struck by a car, understudy Betty steps onto the Milan stage and stuns the house. Her triumph curdles fast. A masked stranger binds her, tapes a row of needles beneath her eyes so she cannot blink without tearing them open, and makes her watch as he slaughters the people closest to her. Cristina Marsillach plays Betty, Ian Charleson directs the cursed staging on screen, and Daria Nicolodi appears as her manager.

This is Argento at his most visually unhinged: a camera that soars over the auditorium, a flock of ravens loosed to hunt the murderer, and a score that smashes opera arias against heavy metal.
