The Nevers (Season 1)

The Nevers (2021) is HBO's sci-fi period drama you can watch online on iFILM. Set in the closing years of Queen Victoria's reign, it follows a London where ordinary people wake up with abilities no one can explain.

They call them the Touched, and most of them are women. One hears music that hasn't been written, another grows unnaturally tall, a third can glimpse what's coming. At the heart of it are Amalia True, a sharp-tongued widow played by Laura Donnelly, and her closest ally Penance Adair, an inventor who builds wonders out of scrap. Together they shelter the Touched and fight off police, gentry and something far darker. Olivia Williams, James Norton and Nick Frost round out a crowded cast.

Conceived by Joss Whedon before he stepped away, the show is at its best when it lets steampunk gadgetry collide with corseted melodrama. Worth a look if you like your superpowers wrapped in petticoats and Victorian grime rather than spandex. Stream The Nevers online on iFILM.
