You Should Have Left

The house is wrong. The angles refuse to line up, hallways run longer than the outer walls allow, and a notebook scrawls the words "you should have left" on its own. Theo is eaten by jealousy over his younger wife and by an old guilt he will not name, and the building seems to read all of it, dragging his secrets into the open faster than he can lie about them. Kevin Bacon carries the film almost solo, sliding from tired father to a man afraid of himself, while Amanda Seyfried plays a wife near the end of her patience. Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park, adapts Daniel Kehlmann's novel and keeps the dread on a low, steady hum rather than piling on jump scares.
