Synopsis
The Young and the Damned (Los olvidados, 1950) is Luis Buñuel's brutal Mexican drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It drops you into the dirt lots and half-built tenements on the edge of Mexico City, where packs of abandoned kids fend for themselves.
Pedro (Alfonso Mejía) wants out. Jaibo (Roberto Cobo), older and just released from juvenile detention, wants him in. When Jaibo pulls the boy into a theft and a killing, there is no clean way back. Buñuel refuses to soften anyone here: a blind beggar, neglectful mothers, children who beat the weak simply because they can. Then he cracks the realism open with Pedro's dream, that surreal slab-of-raw-meat sequence that still unsettles.
The film handed Buñuel the Best Director prize at Cannes and pulled him back into serious cinema after years of silence; UNESCO later added the print to its Memory of the World register. This is hard, unsentimental work, closer to a slap than a hug, and stronger for it. Stream The Young and the Damned (1950) online on iFILM.
