Synopsis
No Regrets for Our Youth (1946) is an Akira Kurosawa drama you can watch online on iFILM. One of the director's earliest and most personal films, made right after the war, it hands the lead to Setsuko Hara.
Japan in the 1930s. Professor Yagihara is forced out of Kyoto University for defying the militarists, and his daughter Yukie is caught between two of his former students: the cautious Itokawa, who rises to become a prosecutor, and the fiery Noge (Susumu Fujita), who vanishes into the anti-war underground. Yukie chooses Noge, and with him she chooses years of fear, surveillance and loss. The story stretches across nearly a decade, from the purge of the faculty to a postwar village where she has to rebuild herself from nothing.
The script drew on real history — the Takikawa Incident and the spy-ring case that sent anti-war activists to the gallows. Kurosawa, usually a chronicler of men, puts a woman at the center here: Hara plays not a victim but someone who decides, at enormous cost, how her own youth will be spent. It's hard, uneven, and honest about the price of conviction. Stream No Regrets for Our Youth (1946) online on iFILM.
