Synopsis

Seven Samurai (七人の侍, 1954) is Akira Kurosawa's landmark Japanese action drama from Toho — watch it online on iFILM in a 4K-restored print. Cinematographer Asakazu Nakai shot the 202-minute film across a single brutally rainy season; composer Fumio Hayasaka built the score around taiko drums.

The setting is mid-16th-century Japan, a village stripped bare by roving bandits who plan to return after the harvest. The farmers cannot fight. Veteran swordsman Kambei Shimada (Takashi Shimura) agrees to defend them and recruits six others — among them the stone-faced blade master Kyuzo and Kikuchiyo, played by Toshirō Mifune: loud, reckless, and hiding real fury behind every bluster. Seven fighters against forty horsemen, the final battle fought knee-deep in autumn mud.

Kurosawa pioneered the use of telephoto close-ups, multi-camera action coverage and slow-motion kills — techniques that became the grammar of every action film that followed. The movie won the Silver Lion at Venice in 1954 and directly inspired The Magnificent Seven and a generation of ensemble-action storytelling. Stream Seven Samurai (1954) in full online on iFILM.
