Synopsis
Throne of Blood (1957), Akira Kurosawa's transplant of Shakespeare's Macbeth into feudal Japan, is available to watch online on iFILM. Proud general Washizu (Toshiro Mifune) rides home from battle through the fog-choked Spider's Web Forest after a hard-won victory.
A spirit at a spinning wheel meets him there and lays out a prophecy: Washizu will rise to rule the castle, yet the throne will pass to the heirs of his comrade Miki, not his own line. The first prediction comes true almost at once. His glacial wife Asaji (Isuzu Yamada) urges him to hurry fate along with a blade, to murder his lord and seize power outright. What follows is a slow descent into paranoia, blood and reckoning.
Kurosawa shot in real mist near Mount Fuji and staged the whole film by the rules of Noh theater: frozen faces, spare gestures, a drumbeat pulse. The climactic storm of arrows became a textbook sequence, filmed with live shafts and no trickery. For anyone curious how a European tragedy can be remade as a purely Japanese parable of doom, this is essential viewing. Stream Throne of Blood (1957) online on iFILM.
