Synopsis
I Live in Fear (1955) is an Akira Kurosawa drama you can watch online on iFILM. Kiichi Nakajima, an elderly foundry owner, is certain of one thing: nuclear war is coming, and Japan will burn first. His answer is escape — he wants to sell everything and move the entire family to a farm in Brazil, far from the fallout.
His relatives think the old man has lost his mind. Children and mistresses alike take him to family court, hoping to have him declared incompetent before his terror bankrupts them all. A dentist serving as a volunteer mediator, Harada, sits through the hearings and finds his own certainty cracking: is the man truly mad, or is everyone else just better at ignoring the bomb? Toshiro Mifune, only thirty-five, vanishes under old-age makeup to play a patriarch crushed by a dread no one shares.
The film arrived a decade after Hiroshima, while Japan was still shaken by the Lucky Dragon fishermen poisoned at a hydrogen-bomb test. Kurosawa shot it right after Seven Samurai, and the reunion of Mifune with Takashi Shimura trades heroics for quiet despair. Slow, uneasy and deeply unsettling, it asks whether clear-eyed fear can look exactly like insanity. Stream I Live in Fear (1955) online on iFILM.
