A dentist serving as a volunteer mediator, Harada, sits through the hearings and finds his own certainty cracking: is the man truly mad, or is everyone else just better at ignoring the bomb? Toshiro Mifune, only thirty-five, vanishes under old-age makeup to play a patriarch crushed by a dread no one shares.

The film arrived a decade after Hiroshima, while Japan was still shaken by the Lucky Dragon fishermen poisoned at a hydrogen-bomb test. Kurosawa shot it right after Seven Samurai, and the reunion of Mifune with Takashi Shimura trades heroics for quiet despair.
