Professor Charles Xavier gathers a handful of teenagers under his mansion's roof. Lined up against them is Magneto and his Brotherhood, with the front line running straight through the school hallways. Across four seasons and 52 episodes, the cast grows up and grows apart in ways that actually sting.

The show deliberately aged its heroes down, and the gamble paid off — teenage insecurity and superpowers turn out to mix surprisingly well. Fans still single out Nightcrawler's arc and the Apocalypse-driven final season. It's a solid doorway into the mutant world for younger viewers.
