The series is adapted from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's Dark Horse Comics run, first published in 2007. Showrunner Steve Blackman leans into the dysfunctional-family angle — each sibling is damaged in a very specific way, and the show earns its emotional beats before it earns its action.
