Synopsis
Ravenous (1999) is Antonia Bird's pitch-black horror western, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In 1847, disgraced captain John Boyd is exiled to a remote army fort high in the snowbound California mountains.
Guy Pearce plays Boyd, a quiet, broken man who once played dead to stay alive. One night a starved stranger named Colquhoun (Robert Carlyle) stumbles in with a grim story: a wagon train trapped in a cave, out of food, the survivors turning on each other to eat. The garrison rides out to check the tale. What waits for them up the mountain is far worse, and hunger turns out to spread like a sickness.
The film fuses things that shouldn't mix — gallows humor, gore and the Native legend of the wendigo. That jittery, lurching score by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn does half the haunting on its own. Not for everyone, but a cult find for anyone who loves strange, savage genre mash-ups. Stream Ravenous (1999) online on iFILM.
