California is about to become a state, and Don Alejandro de la Vega has promised his wife Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and their son Joaquin that the sword is finally going on the shelf. It doesn't stick. A plot festers behind the statehood vote, and only Zorro can pull it apart. Meanwhile his marriage is falling apart, and a cold-blooded aristocrat played by Rufus Sewell keeps circling — clearly knowing more than he lets on.

Campbell, who would later make Casino Royale, stages horseback chases, a runaway train and rooftop swordplay with the same light wit that powered The Mask of Zorro.
