Synopsis
The Celebration (Festen, 1998) is Thomas Vinterberg's Danish drama, available to watch online on iFILM. A grand country estate, a father's sixtieth birthday, the whole family gathered. One toast tears the evening apart.
Eldest son Christian (Ulrich Thomsen) rises with his glass and, in a calm, almost polite voice, tells the assembled guests what their beloved patriarch did to his children years ago. The table goes silent. Some pretend they misheard, some demand he stop, the mother shields her husband, and the younger brother boils over into violence. Yet the wine keeps pouring and the band keeps playing, as a roomful of well-dressed people try to dance their way past a truth that can never be put back in its box.
This was the first film made under the Dogme 95 manifesto: handheld camera, natural light only, no added music or sets. Vinterberg shoots it almost like reportage, and the rawness lands harder than any polished production could. It won the Jury Prize at Cannes and still ranks among the most unflinching films about family silence ever made. Not an easy watch, but the kind you argue about for days.
