The Brood

Frank Carveth picks his daughter Candice up for the weekend from the Somafree Institute, where Dr. Raglan keeps Frank's wife Nola under his unorthodox care. The girl comes home with marks Frank can't explain. Then the killings start, carried out by small, faceless figures, each attack timed to a session inside the clinic. Oliver Reed plays Raglan with a quiet, unsettling calm; Samantha Eggar is Nola, whose buried anger takes physical shape.

Cronenberg made this in the wake of a bitter divorce, and that personal venom bleeds through every frame — the dread here grows out of a family falling apart, not a creature in the dark.
