Synopsis
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) is Norman Jewison's rock-opera film you can watch online on iFILM. Rather than stage it as a costume drama, Jewison frames the whole thing as a performance: a busload of young actors arrives in the Israeli desert and acts out Christ's final days among the ruins and the sand.
The story belongs to Judas. Carl Anderson plays him not as a traitor but as a man genuinely scared that the teacher he loves has started believing his own legend, drifting from his message and growing too close to Mary Magdalene. Ted Neeley pushes through Jesus' near-impossible vocal range, and Yvonne Elliman's "I Don't Know How to Love Him" still stops the film cold. There's no spoken dialogue at all. Every line is sung, start to finish, over Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's score.
The anachronism is the whole point: an ancient story staged with tanks, machine guns, scaffolding and seventies clothes. The film picked up an Oscar nomination for its music and has stayed a fixture for fans of the stage show ever since. Best for anyone who loves bold theatrical swings and wants Webber's score in its rawest, most live form. Stream Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) online on iFILM.
