Matt Lee Whitlock runs the small department in sleepy Banyan Key, Florida. His marriage is falling apart, so he drifts into an affair with the married Ann. After he learns she's dying, Matt quietly pulls seized drug money from the police evidence locker to pay for her treatment. The next morning Ann and her husband die in a fire, the insurance payout is in Matt's name, and every shred of evidence leads back to him. The clock runs hard: he has to erase his tracks before his own detective, played by Eva Mendes, reaches the truth. Sanaa Lathan and Dean Cain round out the cast.

Franklin shapes this like a tight neo-noir built around one cornered man who lies, doubles back, and covers his trail in real time. Washington carries the whole thing on jittery charm.
