Synopsis

A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008) is Nick Park's claymation short, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Half an hour of murder-mystery silliness starring two bakers, one of whom is a silent dog with the most expressive eyebrows in British cinema.

Wallace and Gromit have turned their house into a working bakery, complete with ovens, robotic dough mixers and a windmill on the roof. Business is booming, but Gromit has noticed something grim: a dozen local bakers have gone missing this year. Wallace could not care less, having fallen head over heels for the charming Piella Bakewell, a former bread-advertising model. As ever, it falls to the loyal dog to crack the case.

Aardman builds every frame by hand, and that is the whole joy of it: the backgrounds are packed with tiny visual gags and puns you only catch on a second pass. The late Peter Sallis voices Wallace one last time. Perfect for family viewing and for anyone who misses warm, handmade animation without the digital gloss.
