Synopsis
Last Man Standing (1996) is Walter Hill's crime-western shootout you can watch online on iFILM, starring Bruce Willis alongside Christopher Walken and Bruce Dern. Hill reworks Kurosawa's Yojimbo, dropping the lone-mercenary story into a sun-bleached Texas border town during Prohibition.
A drifter calling himself John Smith pulls into the half-dead town of Jericho on his way to Mexico. Two bootlegging gangs run the place — the Irish Doyle crew and the Italian Strozzi outfit — and they're bleeding each other dry over the whisky trade. Smith hires his pistols out to both, pockets cash from each side and plays them against one another while he waits. He has his own reasons, and he shows no mercy.
Hill treats the whole thing as a pure genre exercise: scorching light, long coats, gunfire howling under desert wind, and a hero who barely speaks. Walken, as the soft-voiced enforcer Hickey, may stick with you longer than Willis does. One for fans of dry, pitiless neo-noir with no sentimental padding.
