Cheers (Seasons 1–11)

Cheers (1982–1993) is the NBC sitcom you can watch online on iFILM, set almost entirely in one Boston basement bar where everybody knows your name. Behind the taps stands Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former Red Sox reliever and recovering drinker who quit the booze but never the flirting.

The show runs on the regulars, not the plot. Brainy, prickly grad student Diane signs on as a waitress and spends five seasons trading barbs and bad timing with Sam. Carla fires off insults along with the drinks, accountant Norm seems welded to his stool, mailman Cliff spouts dubious trivia, and later arrivals Woody the guileless bartender and shrink Frasier Crane round out the crowd. Little happens; the talk is the whole point.

Eleven seasons, 275 episodes, 28 Emmy wins, and a supporting character so good he got his own hit spinoff in Frasier. The series almost never leaves the bar, and that confinement is exactly what turned it into the template every "one location, great ensemble" comedy chased afterward, Friends included.
